A Hearing Aid Solutions specialist is using her experience and expertise to support a national campaign to help individuals with tinnitus, which statistics show is one of the most common health problems and effects about 10 percent of the population.
Tinnitus consultant Sarah Foster is highlighting the condition during Tinnitus Awareness Week (February 6 – February 12) and is appealing to anyone suffering with hearing difficulties to seek advice.
Although there is no known cure, Sarah, who is a consultant at Hearing Aid Solutions in Carmarthen, says there are a range of strategies that can minimise the impact it has on people’s lives.
Tinnitus is not an illness or disease, it’s a term that describes the perception of sound in the absence of any external noise.
The noise can be perceived as ringing, whistling and buzzing and can be in one or both ears or in the head. The sounds can be intermittent or continuous.
Sarah, who covers a large area of South Wales for Hearing Aid Solutions, including Cardiff, Carmarthen, Aberystwyth and Haverfordwest, said Tinnitus Awareness Week, which is organised by the British Tinnitus Association, aims to increase people’s awareness of tinnitus and to encourage them to seek support and advice. It also aims to educate GPs to have a better understanding of the services available to improve patient care.
The British Tinnitus Association provides information on tinnitus and advice on managing symptoms through its website www.tinnitus.org.uk and Sarah Foster and Hearing Aid Solutions can be contacted through www.hearingaidsolutions.co.uk or call 01267 221977.

People in Wales with hearing difficulties could be among the first to benefit from a revolutionary new ‘100 per cent invisible’ hearing aid which can be worn 24-hours a day, seven days a week including during daily activities such as exercising, showering, talking on the phone and sleeping.

Hearing aid audiologist Gareth Morris carries out an examination before fitting

Hearing Aid Solutions, which is based in Carmarthen and with locations across South Wales, is one of only five independent hearing aid specialists in the UK and across Europe and the only one in Wales, chosen to stock and fit the new aid – called Lyric which has been invented and developed in America and Switzerland.

Hearing Aid Solutions recently opened a branch in Aberystwyth and has centres in Haverfordwest, Fishguard, Lampeter, Llandeilo, Swansea, Cardiff and Bridgend. Its services are also available across South Wales by appointments at GP surgeries in Pencoed, Taffs Well, Ystrad Cwrt Rawlin, Clydach, Penarth, Llanelli, Llantwit Major and two in Barry.

Founder and proprietor Martyn Scott is excited that his company has been chosen as one of the practices authorised to fit the device which could transform people’s lives.

He says he has already received enquiries from those who have seen details on the internet.

“Lyric is different from traditional hearing aids because it is placed deep in the ear canal, only four millimeters from the ear drum, and stays there for months at a time.

“The outer ear naturally directs sound towards the device, where sound is then amplified close to the ear drum. Deep canal placement helps improve sound direction, reduces feedback and minimises background noise,” said Mr Scott.

People cannot see Lyric in the ear, and wearers can talk on the phone normally because nothing is outside the ear to interfere with a phone or headset. iPods and MP3 buds can be used normally along with stethoscopes used by Doctors.

Invisibility also helps users forget they are wearing a hearing aid and women can wear their hair short, or up, or behind the ears without anyone knowing they are wearing a hearing aid.

There are no batteries to change, no maintenance needed and no daily fitting required. Lyric can be worn for up to 120 days at a time before needing a replacement, although individual replacement needs may vary.

Although Lyric is a unique hearing solution it is not the right solution for everyone – it is appropriate for people with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss.

But Lyric trained hearing professionals, such as Mr Scott, will assess hearing, ear size and shape, and medical conditions to evaluate if the device is right for each individual.

Mr Scott has attended various conferences, demonstrations and courses to receive full training.

Hearing Aid Audiologist Ryan Punter has joined the Hearing Aid Solutions’ team.
Ryan, aged 37, who lives in Clunderwen, will mainly spend his week covering the Hearing Aid Solutions practices in Carmarthen and Aberystwyth as well as our centres throughout the local counties.
Although always interested in sight and sound – Ryan qualified as an optician to dispense spectacles and contact lenses 14 years ago and holds an Amateur Radio licence for the past eight years – over time his emphasis shifted towards hearing, qualifying in hearing three years ago.
“I spent a large part of my life working for a large optical company. Hearing Aid Solutions is independent which will give me the flexibility and choice to ensure that the patients have the most suitable product for themselves and their lifestyles.
“The variety is probably the biggest challenge but one that I will relish.”
Ryan is married to Lisa and they have two sons, aged 8 and 10 and have lived in West Wales for the past seven years.

Choose what’s best for your needs

Open fit hearing aids are allow external sounds to be received through the hearing aid end fitting so that the wearer does not feel the is ear in completely plugged. Easy to use and maintain, open fit hearing aids are very comfortable to the wearer.
Those who may suffer only a mild to moderate hearing loss should find open fit an ideal solution – remaining discreet, while delivering a natural sound quality.
It fits neatly over the ear and is connected by a thin transparent tube. At the end of the tube is a flexible silicone tip – specially made for each individual ear canal.
Natural sound is allowed into the ear via vents within these tips. This reduces the echo effect and the sound of your own voice appearing strange.
